Are modern drugs dangerous

Every year hundreds of people die from the effects of drugs abuse. It is estimated that at least 5% of young adults in Europe use different kinds of drugs. What is more, one million pills are sold illegally in Britain every week. Fortunately, most countries restrict the use od some drugs, although what is and is not legal varies widely. Society has become more health conscious, and over the last few years people have become more aware of the reasons why they should not abuse harmful drugs.

Drugs! What are they exactly? They are chemical substances that alter the function of an organism. Such chemicals are used for the prevention, treatment, and alleviation of disease. Nowadays, more and more people use psychactive drugs which have been developed to treat patients with severe mental ilnesses. Such drugs decrease the symptoms of schizophrenia, allowing many schizophrenic patients to leave the hospital and rejoin community life. Moreover, antidepressant drugs help the majority of patients with severe depression recover from their disorders. Cocaine is used illegally to improve performance in physical and mental tasks such as athletic events and college examinations. Thus some drugs have a therapeutic features.

On the other hand, an important consideraton in drug theraphy is the fact that the risks outweigh the benefits of using drugs. For example, heroin and cocaine can damage the kidneys. Psysiologically, LSD, a hallucinogenic drug, evolves dream-like changes in mood and thought, and alters the perception of time and space. Also, in the 1960s LSD use was widespread among people who wanted to achieve insights into the nature and themselves. Other modern drugs, such as the barbiturates are used medically to help people sleep. But overdoses of sedative-hypnotics can be fatal.

All in all, it is widely maintained that we should contact the best specialists to learn about medicines we are going to use. Otherwise, we can destroy our health and psyche. All drugs have to be accompanied by a patient information leaflet which contains all useful information. The newest medicine has begun to help people recognise the reasons they should not use strong pills if there is no need for. It must be stressed that a complete recovery from drug addiction requires years of social and psychological rehabilitation.
